Relationship of metallothionein and metal levels with biometric parameters in different tissues of Mullus sp. from the Eastern Adriatic Sea
Present study is part of a collaborative project (CROWAT) with Norwegian Institute for Water Research, which started in 2001. The aim is to define dependence of metallothionein (MT) and metal levels (Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, Cd) in cytosolic fractions (S50) of different tissues on biometric parameters (length, mass, age) of benthic fish, Mullus surmuletus and Mullus barbatus. Fish were sampled in the coastal area of Kaštela Bay (Eastern Adriatic Sea), influenced with the anthropogenic activities. MTs, as a biomarker of metal exposure, were measured by differential pulse polarography and metals by flame AAS. Cytosolic concentrations of MT decrease in different tissues as follows: kidney > intestine > liver > brain. Metal levels are also tissue dependent. Representative tissues for the presence of essential metals are intestine (Zn and Mn) and kidney (Fe and Cu). Statistically significant correlation of metal levels in liver and kidney with biometric parameters indicates to temporal accumulation of metals.
