Review and analysis of displacement ships resistance at rough sea in seven-dimensional space
The paper deals with two significant problems occuring in modern, multicriteria ship design optimization methods. The first of them, the black box syndrome, creates troubles to designers because they do not "see" ship design variants which are generated during the optimization process. The second problem is related to the computation time which is necessary for doing the calculations for the sufficent number of design variants. The solution of these problems is given for resistance at rough sea. Resistance at rough sea for a group of ships, each of them having a 1000-ton displacement, is shown in a seven-dimensional space as functions of length-to-beam ratio, length-to-draught ratio, block coefficient, arm of buoyancy, ship speed and significant wave height. A strong dependence of resistance on ship form characteristics, ship speed and sea state is found, which eliminates the possibility of the black box syndrome. Using the regression analysis, expressions connecting resistance values to the values of the above mentioned ship characteristics have been determined.
