JUVENILE WOOD IN SPRUCE (Picea abies Karst.) - LIMITATION OF USE Comparison of physical and mechanical properties between juvenile and adult wood
In Norway spruce wood (Picea abies Karst.) growth rate (GR), oven dry density, knottiness and 4 mechanical properties (MP) (bending and compression strength, modulus of elasticity in bending (Eb) and toughness (Aw)) at successive growth sections in direction from pith to bark (A - 10 years, B - 20 years, C - 30 years, E - at the border of the cambium) were determined. Oven dry density and MP reached the lowest values in section A, and increased towards the greatest and significantly different values in mature wood (E). Knottiness was the greatest in early period of juvenile wood. Juvenile sections (A, B, C) of sprucewood had significantly lower and MP than mature wood.
