Lumber stockyard – prerequisite for rational utilization of wood

This paper presents the results of moisture content monitoring during the air drying of beechwood in period of 132 days. The aim of research was to determine the lowest moisture content that can be achieved during air drying of beechwood having different thicknesses in the region of north-western Croatia and to compare achieved results with results for average equilibrium moisture content from previous research for that region. At the end of monitoring process of tested thicknesses of beechwood, the average of moisture content was determined having the value of 14, 42 % for all thicknesses. Considering the influence of the thicknesses of the samples, it was expected that the 50 and 60 mm beechwood samples would have higher moisture content than 45 mm samples. Final moisture contents achieved during air drying of beechwood according to the thickensses were 13, 84 % for 45 mm, 14, 28 % for 50 mm, and 15, 13 % for 60 mm thick beechwood. Following equations were determined for decreasing the moisture content during air drying: - thickness 45 mm: Y = 35, 994 x -0, 1801 (R2= 0, 9448) - thickness 50 mm: Y = 43, 840 x -0, 2112 (R2= 0, 9647) - thickness 60 mm: Y = 62, 586 x -0, 2759 (R2= 0, 9915) where Y was moisture content, and X drying time in days. They have coefficients of determination, which explain variability of Y with X accurate approximately 95 % for 45 mm, 96, 5 % for 50 mm and 99 % for 60 mm. On the basis of achieved results and characteristics of the process it can be concluded that the tested stockyard have suitable climate conditions air drying of beechwood. That fact will make possible: the rationalisation of energy for drying process (very small energy quantity is necessary for drying process of beechwood with lower moisture content (especially below fibre saturation point)), the rationalisation of raw material and drying to the final moisture content suitable for usage in construction industry and other outer purposes. The limitation is of course, the prolongation of drying time along with human factor (protection and manipulation with lumber on stockyard)
