Oscillatory nature of decarburization in oxygen blowing and its evaluation using vibratory characteristics of steelmaking processes

The mechanism of carbon oxidation in the oxygen jet-metal interaction zone was studied using hot models. Vibrations were observed in hot models due to cyclic formation of large volumes of carbon monoxide and their emersion at the bath surface. A mathematical model for the formation of a large volume of carbon monoxide, and refinements to the mechanism of gas evolution in the secondary reaction zone were suggested. The pulse-like gas evolution is shown to generate a spherical longitudinal wave that propagates in the liquid metal and the lining, giving rise to vibrations is supported by relationships found for the vibration intensity change during bubbling in a oxygenblown converter of a vacuum degassing furnace. Changes in the vibration level at characteristic frequencies were employed to monitor carbon oxidation process during oxygen blowing in steelmaking furnaces.
