Peritidal sequences and cycles in the Jurassic and Cretaceous of the Adriatic Carbonate Platform
The Jurrassic and Lower Cretaceous sediments of the Adriatic carbonate platform are typical examples of shallow-marine platform carbonates. They were deposited mainly in peritidal environments, restricted shoals, lagoons and shallows with agitated water, while patch-reef deposits are rare. Rhythmic and cyclic peritidal and lagoonal to restricted shallow carbonates dominate in the Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous. Thirteen characteristic cycles were distinguished: predominate peritidal shallowing-upward cycles as a consequence of autocyclic and progradation mechanism, but usually there is also a very explict role of changing water energy, i. e. tidal bar and tempestite deposits.
