Almond clonal selection from the Natural Population
Almond (Amygadalus communis Spock.) selection program was started in 1990 when we choose 13 clones in the area of Dalmatia. The research were carried out according to validly descriptors for the almonds. Biological, morphological, phenological and pomological characteristics, and especially drought resistance of particular clone were examined. Among 13 clones under investigation at the begining of the experiment, seven clones, which exhibited better characteristics then standard cultivars in this area were chosen in 1996. The results of researchs done on these 7clones in the 1996-1999 period are presented in this work. One of chosen clones was weak vigorous, vhile the others were medium or strong vigorous. Leaf size of chosen clones were in the rang betwen 8, 1 cm2 and 18, 3 cm2. All clones had very late blooming time, what is wery important for avoiding of frost damages. Fruit weight of examined clones was betwen 2, 3 g and 3, 8 gr. and kernel percentag was betven 13, 6 % and 47, 5 %. All clones had auto fertility percentage betwen 18, 5 andd 26 %, and pollen grain germination was betwen 61 % and 73 %. These promising clones were propagated by grafting on bitter almond rootstock and planted in collection orchard, where the researches will be continued.
