Spectrum tracing : A vibroacoustic technique to identify mechanisms of turbine cavitation
A vibroacoustic technique for identifying mechanisms of turbine cavitation is proposed. It is based on tracing differences in mean form and fine structure of cavitation noise spectra as sensed in different turbine operational conditions by differently located sensors. The applicability of the method is demonstrated by an experiment on a Francis turbine model, where one had to distinguish between three cavitation types. One cavitation pattern was fully visible and thus could be detected and described vibroacoustically and verified visually. The second could not be seen but could be detected and described vibroacoustically. The third, causing no erosion, had to be detected and described vibroacoustically but only in order to be removed from the total effect estimate.
