The Grimani Cadastral Survey (Eighteen Century): Tracing the Environmental Change in Central Dalmatia
Grimani cadastral survey has been made within the frames of Grimani's agrarian law from the 18 century, accomplished in the occasion of Venetian extension and consolidation of its possessions in Dalmatia - Croatia. As such, Grimani cadastral records are found to be of unique importance as the original documentary evidence of the time. The aim of analyzing the Grimani cadastral record is to trace and reconstruct the basic elements of natural environment as well as dominant forms of subsistence economy that have enforced specific type of environmental impact - deforestation. The comparative analysis of the 20 century topographical map enable the recognition of the main process of environmental change, i.e. abandoning of land to the natural succession and re-afforestation in the course of two centuries.
