Automated Method of Determining the Deformations on Construction Objects under Test Load

At the Faculty of Geodesy, University of Zagreb, the determination of deformations on construction objects referring to a certain line and exposed to various loads, has been automated by means of the electronic theodolite Leica (Kern) E2 and serially connected laptop. In order to obtain the highest degree of accuracy, it is possible to achieve fine sighting 2 to 10 times. The computer automatically selects the blunders of measurements. The reading of horizontal and vertical angle enters into the computer automatically and the deformation related to the reference measurement is computed with the distance measured to the target and entered before the measuring started. During test loads, graphically presented differences in deformation in horizontal and vertical direction between various phases of test deformation could be obtained on the screen after every phase. If the deformation is too big, the increasing of test loads can immediately be interrupted. The first observations in Kaštela (at Split) proved that this method and software are very practical for employment. The obtained standard deviation of determining the shift at the distance of 50 m with one fine sighting to the target was 0.2 mm, and with more fine sightings it can be expected to run even below 0.1 mm. In the new (second) improved variant of software there is possibility of determination dislocation of the theodolite (station).
