Theoretical and Experimental Study of Spherical Rectangular Microstrip Patch Arrays
The interest for spherical arrays is based on their possibility to direct single or multiple beams through complete hemisphere. In the paper the analysis of microstrip patch arrays mounted on multilayer spherical structures is studied. The analysis method is based on spectral-domain approach where the application of the vector-Legendre transformation changes the original three-dimensional problem into a spectrum of one-dimensional problems. In order to obtain numerically stable solution the modified vector-Legendre transformation and the normalized Legendre polynomials are defined and applied to the solution procedure. A laboratory model is developed to verify the program and to investigate how the curvature of the structure is influencing input impedance, mutual coupling and radiation pattern of the spherical array.
