Thyroid hormone autoantibodies in four patients with different thyroid conditions
The presence of thyroid hormone autoantibodies is a phenomenon known since 1956, when an additional binding protein was detected in a patient with papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland. Since then, about 300 cases have been described in the international literature, involving not only different thyroid but also nonthyroidal disorders. thyroid hormone autoantibodies may interfere with the radioimmunoassay, which can cause discrepancy between the clinical finding and laboratory values of thyroxine and triiodothyronine. The sera of our patients showed increased nonspecific T3 binding compared with control. In conclusion, the sera of our patients showed the presence of T3 antibodies of IgG class, i.e. light chain type IgG-lambda in two, and IgG-kappa and IgG lambda in the remaining two patients. It should be emphasized that these are the only cases of thyroid hormone antibodies reported in Croatia.
