Forestry in Croatia: the environment and economic issues
The paper stresses the economic dimension of environmental protection. The analysis seeks to make an economic evaluation of the costs and benefits of resource protection and sustainable management applied to Croatian forestry resources that have been overexpolited in order to fulfil the demand for timber and reaches the conclusion that analyses of forestry services have often focused on the hydrological, climatic and touristic dimensions, but rather seldom on the economic side. To analyse the economic value of forests the cost-benefit analysis i.e. the transport costs method is used. Discussing the value of this analysis the following conclusion is drawn. The economic method should be applied as an element in the decision-making process and not as a stand-alone method, and, this should inspire research to improve the procedures.
environmental protection; eco-forest economy; cost-benefit analysis
