The effect of the rinsing method on the B_2O_3 content in seawater derived magnesia
The effect of the combined rinsing method used to rinse the precipitate of magnesium hydroxide obtained from seawater by substoichiometric precipitation (where precipitation took place with 80 percentage of the stoichiometric quantity of the dolomite lime) has been examined. The rinsing agent was distilled water with a pH = 6.26 and alkalized distilled water with a pH = 12.50. The aim of the study was to reduce the B_2O_3 content in seawater derived magnesia as much as possible in order to ensure high-purity product, because the hot-strenght properties of certain refractory products are significantly affected by their boron content. The results indicate that if the combined rinsing method with this rinsing agent is used, the B_2O_3 content in MgO samples (80 percentage precipitation) amounts to 0.1513 mass percentage, which is 39 percentage less than the B_2O_3 content prepared without rinsing of the magnesium hydroxide precipitate (B_2O_3 = 0.2494 mass percentage).
