Catalytic Liquid-Phase Oxidation of Phenol Aqueous Solutions

The total oxidation of organic compounds in water is used to directly eliminate the pollutants or to transform them into non-toxic products able to be further eliminated by biological treatment. According to the constant increase in the severity of the regulation rules, the classical oxidation processes appear to be limited in terms of efficiency for pollutants removal from wastewater. Different strategies such as “ clean” technology (by far, the best approach), improvement of existing technologies, or development of new, innovative technologies (advanced oxidation) have developed satisfactory reach the requested objectives. Among these new technologies, the catalytic wet hydrogen peroxide oxidation (CWPO) allows to perform oxidation reaction at ambient or close to ambient conditions, limiting the investment costs. This study presents an evaluation of the catalytic performance of CuY-5 catalyst in liquid phase oxidation using a stirred slurry reactor in order to determine the proper operation window. The study was carried out in a temperature range of 343 to 393 K at atmospheric total pressure. Other operational variables employed were oxygen loadings (0-130 cm3 min-1), stirrer speeds (200-800 min-1) and catalyst loadings (0.05-0.4 g). The initial phenol and hydrogen peroxide concentrations were 0.01 mol dm-3 and 0.03 mol dm-3, respectively. Some aspects of the process design of the oxidation reactor have been discussed. Key words: wastewater, oxidation, hydrogen peroxide, phenol, CuY-5 catalyst
