NUMERICAL EXAMINATION OF THE STRAIN GRADIENT EFFECT ON ACCURACY OF BIREFRINGENT COATING METHOD
The influence of strain gradient effect in birefringent coatings on strain transmission through coating thickness was investigated numerically by FEM. Several types of displacements fields at the interface between specimen and coatings were examined: sinusoidal, saw-tooth and trapezoidal as well as the fields in the form of polynomials or parabolas of different orders. These displacement fields were applied to the coatings with thickness ratios lambda/hc varying from 5 up to 25.
