Reduced Stress Concentration Factors for Orthrotropic Strips Loaded in Tension, Compression and Bending
Stress distribution about central elliptical holes in orthotropic plane strips was determined both experimentally by birefringent coatings and numerically using FEM. The strips were loaded in tension, compression and pure bending. The fracture criteria for orthotropic materials were discussed. In order to predict ultimate load and the position of the initial crack the reduced stress concentration factors were defined. After the photoelastic experiments were completed, the models were loaded in tension. The load was gradually increased until the fracture of the models occurred. The load-elongation diagrams were recorded. The ultimate loads and the positions of the initial cracks were calculated using the reduced stress concentration factors. The predicated results agree fairly well with the measured ones.
