Total (Ca) and ionised (Ca2+) calcium concentration in serum of healthy persons
Since the introduction of the ion-selective electrodes, the possibility to measure ionic calcium concentration, as the main active calcium form in body fluids, has been widely explored. Despite the numerous articles in this field, the dilemma about the relationship between age, sex and calcium serum concentration still remains unresolved. Our investigation on a group of healthy persons with no metabolic calcium disorders, at the age from 1 to 91 years, shows a statistically significant correlation between age, and total, as well as ionic serum calcium concentration, for both sexes. Moreover, it is possible to prove a strong correlation (P<0, 001) between serum total and ionic calcium concentrations, also in both sexes. Therefore, the measurement of only one calcium form in serum may be sufficient for the routine calcium analysis.
