Application of Advanced Decision Techniques in Restricted Characterisation of Materials using Ultrasound
In materials characterisation using ultrasound, material properties can be determined using ultrasonic wave reflected from the tested object surface. In the application of that technique onto buried object materials characterisation, the environment additionally influences the reflected ultrasonic wave characteristics, through structure and geometry of the contact region between the transfer object and the buried object ; of the transfer object and of the tested object. Extraction of buried object materials characteristics out of the total environment influence requires application of statistically founded signal processing methods and algorithms. In this paper the materials characterisation using ultrasound was conducted on the representative set of buried object materials and corresponding environments. Using the discrimination technique, characteristics of the registered, reflected ultrasonic wave induced by the tested object&#8217 ; s material, are extracted. Results point to applicability of the technique, because of the testing equipment simplicity and reliability of the results obtained.
