Lower Cretaceous Platform Deposits of Mt.Svilaja

Lower Cretaceous deposits of the Mt. Svilaja form a small part of the large and long-lasting carbonate platform, named "the carbonate platform of the External Dinarides" by POLŠAK et al. (1982) or "the Adriatic-Dinaridic carbonate platform" (ADCP) by JENKYNS (1991), GUŠIĆ & JELASKA (1990, 1993) and JELASKA et al. (1994). The Mt. Svilaja is a southwestern part of the External Dinarides which are commonly referred to as the outer units of the Dinarides orogen. The Lower Cretaceous deposits of the Mt. Svilaja are usually monotonous and consist, as well as in the great majority of other regions of ADCP (for example ; Istria, Mts. Velika Kapela and Mala Kapela, islands of Cres, Lošinj, Mljet, Mt. Biokovo, etc.), of shallow-water carbonate: limestones, late-diagenetic and early-diagenetic dolomites, and intraformational breccias. Among various limestone types, the mud-supported types predominate over the grain-supported types. The dolomites, usually late-diagenetic, are also present. They occur in transitional Jurassic - Cretaceous and Lower - Upper Crteaceous levels, which are also characterized by emersion surfaces, or by a series of several temporary short-lasting emersions (VELIĆ, 1988 ; VELIĆ et al., 1989. The Lower Cretaceous deposits of Tethyan carbonate platforms were characterized by development of rudists and larger foraminiferal assemblages as stratigraphic reference taxa. The ADCP is represented by shallow-water carbonate facies and therefore the stratigraphic subdivision of the Lower Cretaceous succession of the ADCP is primarily possible only on the basis of two groups of micro-organisms: benthic foraminifera (orbitolinids and other) and, to a lesser extent, calcareous algae (Dasycladaceae).
