The corrosion behaviour of a-brass in chlorinated seawater
This work has examined the behaviour of a-brass in natural seawater at different conditions of aeration, streaming, and content of active chlorine. A short time immersion test has shown a pronounced shift in the open circuit potential of the electrode towards more positive values when hypochlorite has been added into the electrolyte. In order to examine the causes of this phenomenon, long time immersion examinations has been carried out. Hence, the time dependence of the EOCP was examined during a period of 250 hours. Polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance measurements and voltammetric techniques have been employed at specified time intervals to determine the mechanism of the effect of hypochlorite on passivaton behaviour of the alloy examined.
