Sustainable Cooling and Heating Energy Supply in Tourism Facilities

After process of consolidation of Croatian tourism industry and according to the world&#8217 ; s trends in tourism growth of 3% per year, it can be expected that Croatian tourism industry will increase in the future. Tourist growth is followed by energy consumption growth. Hotels and tourist complex are high density energy consumers with app. 340 - 550 kWh/m2year and average 21, 4 kWh/guest night. Bearing in mind that heating and air conditioning accounts for almost half of the energy consumption of many hotels, necessary infrastructure to meet growing demand with minimal impact to natural resources and environment should be provided. By design of the centralized energy systems for hot and cold water production, optimization of system is possible, and the peak energy demand can be easily covered. District cooling and heating systems with lot of advantages, can be integrated with renewable energy sources, with the back up fuel supply. Paper deals with centralized district cooling system, where three case studies with renewable energy technologies (RET) in hotels are given as example. Systems utilizing free cold energy from the seawater, and absorption systems utilizing heat from the solar panels meet necessary conditions for sustainable tourism development providing the thermal comfort, water and energy conservation, and at the same time negligible visual and noise pollution.
