EMG analysis of muscle load during simulation of characteristic postures in dinghy sailing
The aim of this work is to establish the characteristic values of the absolute and relative electromyographic (EMG) signal in the simulation of hiking in the laser standard class. Four muscle groups were analyzed, which are, according to the experience of sailors themselves, and certain other experts (Legg et al. 1999), the muscles most exposed to strain during training and racing in all classes of dinghy sailing, as well as in the Olympic laser standard class (extensors of the lower leg, abdominal, lumbar and tibial muscles). A MEGA 3000 apparatus was used (Mega Electronics Limited - Finland) for the recording of EMG signals. EMG data for each analyzed muscle in each examinee were then converted into numerical ASCI format and compared by means of variance analysis. According to results of researches carried out, the muscles most loaded in the characteristic hiking positions (sitting, upright hiking, leaning backwards hiking) are the quadriceps muscle of the thigh (EMG% = 70-102% EMGmax), followed by abdominal muscles (EMG% = 1-60% EMGmax), while muscles of the lumbar part of the back and anterior tibial muscles are not significantly loaded. The data obtained allows for a better understanding of the character of the load in particular muscle groups in positions characteristic of the laser standard class sailing, and these insights can probably be applied to other classes of dinghy sailing.
