Landscape of the future: the future of landscape architecture education

Radical changes in the landscape have become an axiom in the current space development. As such they present a constant and increasing challenge to landscape architecture as a planning profession. With this in mind, the European Conference of Landscape Architecture Schools (ECLAS) organized an annual meeting in Dubrovnik in the Fall of 2000. The turn of the century seemed an appropriate point in time to choose a future-oriented subject for the theme of this event. When considering its activity, any education must look into future and this refers especially to education for the planning professions. For landscape architecture, this statement implies in the first place dependence on the ongoing processes in the landscape. Therefore, the Dubrovnik Conference attempted to envisage the problems and transformations that are expected to take place in tomorrow, s landscape on the one hand and to discuss their educational repercussions on the other. In doing so, conference papers have shown a wide range of problems that the profession covers in the urban as well as in the open landscape. The entire subject matter was roughly articulated into three main areas: the relevant physicality of the landscape, planning issues together with relationship to related professions and, last but not least, various contemporary and future teaching approaches and methods. The six papers published here are just a selection of 18 presentations. They were chosen for their timeliness and because they are representative of the problematic the conference has dealt with. Also, they brought forth a number of new viewpoints that can promote conceptual thinking both in planning and in education. It is for these reasons that the organizers regarded them interesting for the wider professional audience.
