GENETIC VARIABILITY OF COMMON MAIZE HYBRIDS GROWN IN SLOVAKIA AND CROATIA
Croatia and Slovakia can be considered as parts of one maize "mega-environment", since they have mainly similar growing conditions. Maize breeders from Slovakia and Croatia intercrossed a series of single crosses, which included one parental inbred line from Slovakia (TVA lines) and other inbred line from Croatia (OS lines). Objectives of this study were to analyze genetic variability of the common maize hybrids for grain yield and to find out which hybrids are wide adapted. The experiment was conducted as a randomized complete block design in three replications at Trnava (Slovakia) and Osijek (Croatia) in 1996 including twenty-one maize hybrids from which eleven were common single crosses. There were significant differences among genotypes at both locations, as well as between two locations with 9.4 t/ha in Trnava and 11.5 t/ha in Osijek where all genotypes had consistently higher means. Great differences for Croatian material indicate their low level of adaptedness for Slovakian growing conditions. Common hybrids that are stable according to dynamic concept can be recommended as the best wide adapted material for growing at the mega-environment
