IAEA Regional TC Project RER/0/019, Sustainable Energy Options for Eastern Europe, Croatia - Case Study

The main goal of this study was to analyse development of the power system as a part of the energy system using MESSAGE model. The time frame for this study is from 2001 to 2020. In this 20 years period, there are several possibilities for power system and energy system development. There are several options for supply of natural gas, with different investment cost and different time schedule of implementation. There is Kyoto obligation which strongly influences power system development. In the Croatian Power System there is a Nuclear Power Plant Krško &#8211 ; ; ; ; NPPK (situated in Slovenia). Today there is no power delivery from NPPK to the Croatian Power System. It is still to be decided what will be in the future. Two options are considered &#8211 ; ; ; ; with and without power delivery from NPPK. These options strongly influence the operation and the expansion of the power system. Influence of the NPPK on the power sector development was analysed under certain assumptions. The first case does not impose any limits in terms of CO2 emission or fuel availability. In the second case gas supply for power sector is limited. The third case adds another limit &#8211 ; ; ; ; CO2 emission quota. The fourth case limits CO2 emission, but gas supply for electricity generation is unlimited. At the end of this report conclusion about simulation results are given, and also some recommendations regarding MESSAGE model.
