The Nineteenth Century Transformation of the Croatian Historical Towns into the Modern Central European Cities
The second half of the nineteenth century was a period of outstanding progress of mayor Croatian cities such as Zagreb and Rijeka. Economic growth was followed by planned urban transformation that planted Central European character into the image of those cities, placing them among other Central European capitals that defined their modern urban character during the second half of the nineteenth century. Local architects, educated abroad, as well as frequent and important presence of foreign architects (primarily form Vienna, Budapest and Trieste), supported by the wise city government, played the fundamental role in that transformation. At the end of the nineteenth century major Croatian cities have completed their urban transformation based on planned documentation and marked by intensive works in the field of traffic, industry and communal standards. They build up their image as modern cities which acquired their metropolitan character recognized even today as a part of their identity.
