LEADERSHIP OF COACHES-SELF PERCEPTION VS. PERCEPTION OF THEIR MALE AND FEMALE BASKETBALL TRAINEES
Sport training and performance are influenced by the coach-athlete relationship. Coaches may induce variations in trainees' perceived competence, skills, self-esteem, motivation, goal orientation etc. Qualification, personality and leadership style make coaches distinctive. The aim was to investigate the differences between coaches' self-evaluation and trainees' perception of their coaches' (Nc=39) leadership behaviour on the sample of Croatian male and female basketball players (Nm=189, Nf=159, 13-17 yr.). The gender-induced differences in perception were also investigated. Four dimensions (Leadership Scale for Sport, British version, Lee et. al.1993) were measured: explanation and instruction, democratic style, positive feedback and social support. The difference between evaluations of player and coaches were tested by the t-test for independent sample respecting the different ratio of variances computed for the samples of coaches and athletes by the Levene's test prior to the analysis. The significant differences occured betwwen the girl's perceptions and coaches' self-evaluation in the reward, explanation and social support dimension (p<0.01) and in all dimensions between the boys' perceptions and coaches' self-estimation (p<0.01). Coaches overestimated their leadership behaviour-they saw themselves more positively than the athletes saw them. The statistically significant differences among self-perceptions of coaches were obtained in all dimensions but reward-the boys' coaches estimated themselves as more supportive and more information giving than the girls' coaches who perceived themselves as more instructive. The results may improve the communication process between coaches and athletes and help coaches to work on all leadership dimensions to improve their actual behaviour.
