THE IMPACT OF COMPETITIVE ORIENTATION ON MOTIVATIONAL CLIMATE AND INTRINSIC MOTIVATION OF YOUNG BASKETBALL PLAYERS
The purpose of the study was to determine the influence of athlete's competitive orientation on multidimensional measures of intrinsic motivation and motivational climate in young basketball players. The sample consisted of young players aged 13 to 18 yr.(N=190 ; M=15.53, SD=1.1)from 17 different Croatian clubs. Athlete's competitive orientation-one of the aspects of motivational climate, was assesed with Learning and performance orientation in PE questionairre-LAPOPECQ(Papaioannou, 1994, adapted by Baric, 2000).It also measures learning orientation of coach and athlete, worries about mistakes and outcome without effort dimension.Intrinsic Motivation Inventory(Mc Auley, Tamenn and Duncan, 1989)was used to asses athlete's intrinsic motivation (dimensions:interest/enjoyment, perceived competence, effort and pressure/tension).Difference between athletes with low and high competitive orientation were copmuted by ANOVA. Participants were divided into groups according to the results on the competitive orientation factor, using medion criterion. Analysis showed that copmetitive orientation significantly affects athlete's intrinsic motivation and their perception of motivational climate in sport setting. Players with higher competitive orientation place higher importance to effort(p<0.031), perceive climate on training sessions as more learning oriented (p<0.00), more often worry about mistakes(p<0.00) and define success by clear ability-based criteria (p<0.00)(outcome without effort) than these with lower strive for competition.Young basketball players who are more competitive oriented perceive their coach as more learning oriented (p<0.00) than their less competitive teammates. The practical value of this study is to remind coaches to reinforce task orientation and intrinsic motivation in order to enhance adherence to sporting activities.
