The investigation of the settlement Mačkovac-Crišnjevi, Nova Gradiška, Croatia
The village Mačkovac is situated on the left, Croatian bank of the river Sava, 15 km south of the city of Nova Gradiška. The site is on the area called Crišnjevi, about 1 km north of the village Mačkovac (92 m above sea level). The excavations revealed the traces of two houses (with wooden posts) and more than 10 hearths spread across the excavated area. Near the hearths evidence of metallurgical activity was found: one piece of ingot, a bellow nozzle, some slag and an unfortunately damaged part of a stone mould. The majority of metal finds are different types of pins like the ones with biconical heads, sewing pins, big and richly decorated pins which date the site to the end of the Middle Bronze Age. The pottery shows all the characteristic of the period of the beginning Urnfield Culture. The pottery as well as the metal finds date the settlement to the end of the Middle Bronze Age and the beginning of the Late Bronze Age. The main domestic economy was based on agriculture and cattle-based economy with occasional fishery and previously mentioned metallurgical activity. It is not possible to say how many inhabitants lived in the settlement but it is obvious that we are dealing with a large village community.
