depression in the patient with thyroid dysfunction
Our research was carried out on a group of 53 female patients with thyroid dysfunction and 28 female patients with unipolar major depression. We used the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale and the Clinical Global Impression. The research results showed that most of the patients with thyroid dysfunction had a clinically significant depressive disoder. Depressive disorder was more frequent in patients with hypothyroidism than in patients with hyperthyroidism. It was less severe in patients with thyroid dysfunction than in patients with unipolar major depression. The patients with hyperthyroidism had less severe symptoms of inhibition and the patients with hypothyroidism had less severe symptoms of agitation than the patients with unipolar major depression. We concluded that the patients with thyroid dysfunction are potentially at risk for depressive disorder so its timely a diagnosis and treatment are recommended in order to avoid the risk of chronicity.
