Efficacy of fluoxetine in PTSD patients
This paper describes efficacy of fluoxetine in treatment of PTSD patients. A special attention is paid to particular symptoms. 46 outpatients of both sexes, aged 30-65 years with diagnosis of PTSD according to DSM IV criteria were included in a prospective, controlled trial. Fluoxetine in daily dose between 20 and 80 mg was applied for 12 weeks. The treatment response was assessed by means of HDRS, HARS, CMPTSD and CGI. The efficacy of fluoxetine was assessed each week and at the end of the trial by final evaluation of therapeutic effects. After 12 weeks in 62.8% of patients a considerable improvement was observed, in 34.9% patients improvement was minimal and status of 2.3% of patients has minimally worsened. Analysis of specific symptoms which were monitored as CMPTSD items has shown that specific smyptoms differently respond to a fluoxetine therapy. For example, in items number 1, 8, 11, 14 and 24 no statistically significant difference was observed between the beginning and the end of study. Differently, in CMPTSD items number 9, 10, 16, 20 and 21 a statistically significant difference (on 5% significance level) was observed after 12 weeks of treatment. The results are suggesting the following: (1) fluoxetine is efficient drug of cnoice in treatment of PTSD and (2) differences in therapeutic response are showing a need for additional researches aimed to more precisely define sub-categories in wxpected treatment response.
