"The model of intervention for convicted drug-addicts in institutional and community settings"

The drug treatment project entitled "The model of intervention for convicted drug-addicts in institutional and community settings", supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Justice of Republic of Croatia has been conducted for more than a year in Zagreb, under the leadership and supervision of Criminology and Penal Rehabilitation professors of the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences. The goal of the project was to create, implement and evaluate a treatment programme for drug abusers in the correctional institutions and in the after-care period. Therefore the purpose of the project was to introduce a systematic treatment programme with the emphasis on the after release treatment and the evaluation of the methods of work. The basic presumption was that the project would help to establish the most efficient methods of work with drug abusers in the prisons and in the after-care phase. The programme is based on the theories of social learning and the lifestyle theory, and has been scientifically evaluated by the set of measuring instruments. According to the legal and ethical criteria, a sample of the convicted drug-abusers was formed who participate in the individual and group treatment in the County jail of Zagreb. In the after-release period, they participate in the treatment in the community. The project team includes 7 members of the correctional staff in Zagreb County jail, 3 therapists from Zagreb Centre for Prevention of Drug Abuse and a number of undergraduate students from the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences. The project should last for five years and its achievements should be incorporated in the Croatian Penal System. It will be presented in two posters: 1.The first will contain the presentation of the structure of the programme and its contents 2.The second poster will contain the preliminary results, the practical issues and the implementation problems.
