Endangered sand vegetation on the island of Mljet (Southern Adriatic, Croatia) : coastal halo-psammophyte zonation and vegetation analysis
Rare and endangered coastal halo-psammophyte vegetation has been studied. The plant formations are developed on the deposits of siliceous sand on the south-east part of the island of Mljet. 34 vegetation releves (3x10m) were made at different distances from the sea. The releves were analysed using the middle-european phytosociological and standard statistical methods. Phytosociological analysis has shown that the studied vegetation belongs to the association Echinophoro-Elymetum farcti Gehu 1987. Also in this plant communiti are found many rare and endangered species of Croatian Flora included i the Red Data Book: Calystegia soldanella, Echinophora spinosa, Sporobolus pungens, Pancratium maritimum, Saccharum ravenae. Furtermore statistics has shown zonation and grouping of phytosociological releves in four grops depending on the distance from the sea.
