MANAGING THE EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIMENTAL FOREST SITE DUBOKA WITH THE AHP
Forest management is a very complex activity. The complexity arises primarily from a large number of factors influencing strategic and tactical decisions. Another problem of equal importance is the fact that almost all significant factors are of a stochastic nature and are subject to a larger or smaller degree of uncertainty. There is also the problem of quantifying the qualitative attributes. But theoretical mathematical achievements, supported by electronic computers, have reached levels at which it is possible to solve highly complex practical problems. The paper presents the development of a concrete forest management model. For the purpose of educating specialist staff and conducting scientific-research work, the Faculty of Forestry of Zagreb University manages a part of mountain beech forests in the Slavonia-Požega County not far from the municipal centre Velika. The site in question is the educational and experimental forest site Duboka. Regardless of a management goal, every forest today must fulfil multiple functions (multiple purpose forestry). The defined goals for the forest to be managed include: - ensuring the ecosystem sustainability - preserving and improving non-commercial forest functions - producing minimal wood mass. However, this forest is especially intended for scientific research and teaching purposes. A mathematical model has been established for managing the scientific-teaching site Duboka. The multiple criteria method, called Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) has been chosen as the most optimal method of management with the multiple-use forest. The hierarchical structure and the "calculation" of priorities (weights) provide a rating of the offered management alternatives, which assists us in a decision-making process.
