Pitting of stainless steel with oxides formed in temperature gradient
Oxide layers were prepared on the surface of specimens, made from stainless steel AISI 316L, by heating in temperature gradient. X-ray diffraction analysis was performed in order to determine superficial oxide and metallic phases. The changes of metal grains sizes were determined by optical micrography. From several specimens oxide layers were removed in HNO3 + HF solution. Thereafter, pitting corrosion susceptibility was tested in FeCl3 solution according to ASTM G 48-92. 8 topographic pitting evaluation criteria were determined. In general, the presence of oxide layers affects pitting liability harmfully. The removal of oxides is favourable for several criteria but for some others is ineffective. An attempt to interpret the results is carried out in the Discussion.
