Atyaephyra desmaresti and Palaemonetes antennariurs (Crustacea, Decapoda, Caridea) in the delta of the Neretva river (Croatia).
Distribution patterns of two species Atyaephyra desmaresti and Palaemonetes antennarius (Decapoda, Natantia) in the delta of the River Neretva, Croatia. Biologia, Bratislava, xx: xxx-xxx, 200x ; ISSN 0006-3088. Two decapod species Atyaephyra desmaresti (Millet, 1831) and Palaemonetes antennarius (H. Milne Edwards, 1837), and their representative types of habitats in the delta of the River Neretva, have been researched from April 1993 to November 1997 at 14 sites. The aim was to ascertain the similarities and di~erences of habitat conditions of these two species. Salinity oscillations and composition of submerged vegetation as microhabitat have been observed. Field observations on difl'erent habitats indicated that P. antennarius prefer shallow inland lakes and springs with limnic water, whereas A. desmaresti prefers rivers with brackish water. However, both species are known to be tolerant to medium salinity oscillations. In this research P. antennarius was found to inhabit limnic and oligohaline water (0-5 %o), while A. desmaresti was found in habitats with larger salinity oscillations, which occur in mesohaline water (5-9 °/o). Only A. desmaresti was observed in occasions of increased marine influence due to low seasonal freshwater inflow in dry period (October).
