Effect of repeated UV-irraditaon on Hydra oligactis Pallas

Background and purpose: Hydra is a very suitable test organism for laboratory research. During the entire life it contains undifferentiated totipotent cells that can quickly replace the used and damaged cells. The effect of UV-irradiation on the green hydra was studied before. In this study we tried to determine the effects of repeated UV-irradiation to the Hydra oligactis species in laboratory conditions and to compare them with the results from the known literature data. Materials and methods: Hydra oligactis was irradiated for 15 minutes with UV-light (wavelength of 283.5 nm). In treated animals mortality, changes in behaviour, histological and cytological changes were monitored. After regeneration of damaged body-parts, hydras were irradiated again with UV-light of same wavelength, for the same period of time. Results: In hydras that were exposed to repeated irradiation, similar but less intensive changes were observed. It is due to elimination of UV-light highly sensitive individuals during the first irradiation experiment. Conclusions: Since today we are facing the changes of hydra populations in the wild and the changes in their natural habitat, the solar irradiation is presumed to be one of the causing factors.
