Magnetic Field Monitoring of Induction Motors Proactive and Predictive Monitoring Tecnology

Magnetic Field Monitoring is a very important part of a proactive and predictive induction motor monitoring program. Such a program should also contain measurement of vibration, temperature and shaft currents. For Magnetic Fields Monitoring a specially designed flux coil is employed to capture flux signals which provide an electrical quality signature sensitive to conditions which alter the electrical characteristics of an electric motor in operation, such as loose stator coils, broken rotor bars, eccentricity, imbalance between phases, stator winding faults etc. An electric motor by definition produces magnetic flux. Any small unbalances in the magnetic or electric circuit of an induction motor is reflected in the axially, radially and tangentially transmitted fluxes. The special sensors for detecting these signals are flux coils. The frequency spectrum of a flux measurement contains a wealth of frequencies. A flux measurement and the following FFT Analysis of this spectrum can supply an indication of rotor bar defects. There are also many frequencies voltage supply and stator winding faults. It is important that the measurement are taken with the same sensor at the same location and with the same spacing between the sensor and the motor for the repeatability and trending capabilities of this system. Case histories will be shown to illustrate the practical use and effectiveness of Magnetic Field Monitoring of induction motors.
