AMBIENT VIBRATION MEASUREMENTS

Structural analysis is usually carried out by aid of the analytical models that have, together with the computational power, considerably improved. Yet, the modeling of true structural behavior of existing buildings presents a difficult step in the analysis because of unknown building methods, various materials used, structural degradation and complex structural history. As each structure is unique there are no standard or usual methods that could guide the engineer how to perform the optimal structural strengthening method. Estimation of the structural state presents an important and invaluable first step where dynamic testing gives much information: natural frequencies, damping values and mode shapes. From the measured dynamic characteristics and by comparing them with the results of calibrated analytical model judgment can be made on the structural state and strength. Experimentally determined parameters represent the basis of each mathematical model. When the analytical investigations have been carried out previously, the experimental results enable the reanalysis of structure's stability with more accuracy than in the design phase. Consequently, reliable data about structure behavior during exploitation can be gathered only on the basis of combined analytical and experimental investigations. Standard dynamic testing methods are: ambient and forced vibration measurements, impulse excitation and transfer function tests. All of them are non-destructive and use some sort of statistical averaging in order to derive the important data from which structural characteristics are obtained.
