Multilayered Glass Facades
Innovative approaches in glass façade design are changing the traditional role of architectural envelopes. The analysis of experimental models of multilayered glass envelopes will provide an insight into contemporary research that results in reinterpreting the term ‘envelope’ in spatial and functional sense. The two-dimensional surface at the border of the inner and outer space is being transformed into a three-dimensional assembly of interdependent elements, creating intermediate spaces between the envelope layers. By analysing specific design approaches, this paper will investigate the influence of the transformations of the glass facade on the overall quality of the building. Furthermore, paper will assess the impact of the multilayered facade on the overall energy balance of the building and on microclimate conditions of the interior space. The advantages and disadvantages of multilayered glass facades and their potential for further research will be identified.
