How Quality of Journalism Influences Press Freedom in 14 European Countries: A fsQCA Approach
Media freedom as press freedom is often seen as the main value against which the quality and democratic success of media system is judged. While press freedom is generally higher in Europe that in relation to the world average, there is significant variation and not all European countries measure highly on this scale. In this paper we investigate the relationship of the journalistic field with the press freedom values in 14 Western and Eastern European countries. The study is based on case studies of media systems in the same 14 countries, and the fsQCA (fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis) calibrations performed in the course of the MEDIADELCOM Horizon 2020 project. The fsQCA analysis is expected to show which combinations of contingent conditions in the countries relate to higher or lower values on the press freedom index.
