Deciphering the Nomenclature of Chemical Compounds in NooJ

What we propose in this project is a multifaceted approach, the design of which is well supported by NooJ. The Croatian Chemical Compounds Module consists of three layers: it uses (1) the NooJ dictionary as the basis for (2) the morphological grammar, and both (1) and (2) are used for (3) the syntactic grammar. Our main goal is to recognize a full compound, but also to segment it down to the smallest elements in order to produce its chemical formula. This information can be used in search queries but also in machine translations. The results are also valuable in the building of specialized lexica and systematization of scientific nomenclature.
