An adaptation of open-source FEA software OOFEM for ship structural analysis
The paper presents challenges and opportunities that arise from application of modern FEA open- source software in ship structural analysis. Requirements of the CSs regarding FEA software are used to assess capabilities of the open-source software Object Oriented Finite Element Solver (OOFEM), where necessary improvements are identified, mainly related to the accuracy of membrane and shell finite elements and options for stress recovery. Based on that some modifications of existing elements have been done but the main task was selection and implementation of suitable quadrilateral shell elements. The results of an ongoing verification of the newly implemented elements on relevant verification examples are given to prove the usability of software in ship structural analysis.
