Relative efficiency of radiophotoluminescent glass detectors in low energy ion beams

In heavy charged particle dosimetry, luminescence efficiency strongly depends on the linear energy transfer (LET). Therefore, for the correct interpretation of measurements in hadron radiotherapy and space dosimetry, but also for the validation of developing microdosimetry models, it is important to characterize the efficiency of the detectors as a function of the particles LET. Available literature data for the efficiency of radiophotoluminescent (RPL) glass detectors are scarce and in particular, no data were found for the low energy/high LET range. The aim of this presentation is to describe new experimental results obtained using low energy ion beams provided by the accelerator facility at the Ruđer Bošković Institute. RPL detectors made of the most widely used RPL material (silver.activated phosphate glass) were irradiated using the narrow 1H, 7Li and 12C ion beams with energies from 1 to 15 MeV and corresponding LETw values from 8 to 674 keV m-1. Due to known difficulties in comparing efficiency data from different studies, procedure of calculation of the efficiency is discussed.
