The relationship between residential satisfaction and some dimensions of social cohesion – an example from socialist (old) and post-socialist (new) housing estates in Croatia

Residential satisfaction is one of the aspects of quality of life that is measured through satisfaction with one's own dwelling and estate (physical, social, economic, environmental and other aspects). One of the social aspects connected to it is social cohesion, defined as the level to which a society “‘hangs together’ ; all the component parts fit in and attribute to society’s collective project and well-being” (Kearns and Forrest, 2000 ; Dekker and Rowlands, 2005). In this seminar a multilevel regression model will be presented: the correlates are variables that represent some dimensions of social cohesion (place attachment, social networks, common values etc.), while the criterion variable is satisfaction with the estate. The aim is to analyse which dimensions are crucial for residential satisfaction, whether the relationship between these variables changes depending on the conditions of the estate and what are the differences between the old and new estates. The data comes from a survey on the quality of living in the housing estates of the socialist and post- socialist era conducted in Croatia in four large cities (N=1532). The results show that the dimensions of social cohesion are, according to theory, positively correlated to residential satisfaction. However, the interrelation and strength of the connection is in some estates somewhat different and unexpected.
