SERVICE LEARNING AS AN EFFICIENT TOOL IN ACHIEVING SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT

Biodegradable waste can either be an environmental problem or a valuable organic fertilizer that improves soil structure and quality. Therefore, it is important to raise awareness among local population that separate collection and composting of biodegradable waste is an essential link in an integrated system of waste management, circular economy and environmental protection. In this paper, we share our experience of how the application of the service-learning educational tool has been used to raise awareness of the role of composting. The service-learning program combines theoretical course content with practical work for the common good. Former students were involved in making home composters and creating content for the platform, while current students participated in promoting the platform, installing and maintaining composters, monitoring biowaste composting at selected educational institutions, and conducting educational workshops for other students, focusing on composting using STEM elements as an educational approach. Service-learning program implementation results shows that service- learning can be used as an efficient tool in achieving the zero-waste strategy in the local community.
