COMPARISON OF COMPOSTING AND FERMENTATION OF BIOWASTE PERFORMED IN SMALL DECENTRALIZED COMPOSTERS

Nearly one-third of municipal solid waste generation is categorized as biodegradable waste. Its further processing into compost or biogas is therefore necessary. Recently, decentralized composting facilities and devices are receiving increased interest due to the logistical, economic, environmental and social benefits. Such facilities and devices are recognized as the key to achieving sustainable waste management and a circular economy. In addition to aerobic composting, a composter can also operate on the principle of fermentation of biowaste, which shortens the composting time with the creation of high-quality precompost. In this paper, a comparison of biowaste composting is performed in three small decentralized composters filled with biowaste with addition of inoculants with anaerobic, aerobic and without microorganism addition. The composting process was monitored by pH, electrical conductivity, temperature and height of the compost mass, moisture, dry matter, volatile matter, carbon content and C/N ratio. Leachate was collected and analysed for the leachate volume, pH, electrical conductivity, and turbidity. In addition, the obtained precomposts were proceeded for further maturation into two soils types, and the pH, electrical conductivity, moisture, dry matter, volatile matter, carbon and nitrogen content were measured. Based on the results, the difference between the classical composting and biowaste fermentation were analysed and discussed.
