Precision high power wide bandwidth AC/DC current shunt

As new calibration equipment becomes available, there is an increasing demand for calibrations at higher currents and wider frequency ranges of up to 100 kHz and 100 A [1]. In response to this demand, we have expanded our acdc capability and developed a new set of standard shunts suitable for measuring currents in laboratories, as well as for use in power electronics applications [2]. When measuring current with a shunt in higher frequency systems, there are issues such as excessive ripple, overshoots, and current phase shift due to the inductance of the current shunt. In power electronics, fast switching speeds of wide-bandgap devices require high-bandwidth shunts to measure their transient behaviour [4]. The new developed current shunt standard should have minimal parasitic inductance to the switching power loop and preferably small geometry (cca. 37mm in diameter and 56mm in length). At maximum rated current, the temperature should not exceed approximately 90 degrees Celsius because of influence of TCR [6]. An analysis of conventional shunt resistors reveals that achieving high bandwidth requires a coaxial structure with low parasitic inductance and good cooling capabilities.
