Mate Ujević and Burgenland Croats

The paper deals with the relationship and cooperation between Mate Ujević and the Burgenland Croats that took place in the 1930s. The cooperation between Mate Ujević and the Burgenland Croats (primarily Ignac Horvat) began in Zagreb, when Slavko Marhold, Fridrik Alfons and Ignac Horvat accepted Ujević's invitation and arrived at the Eucharistic Congress in Zagreb in 1930. After their first meeting in Zagreb, Horvat published a short story collection in 1930 named Gradišćanke (eng. Croatian Women from Burgenland), published by the Croatian Literary Society of St. Jerome (Mate Ujević wrote an afterword). In addition to this, Ujević published his work Hrvatska književnost (eng. Croatian Literature) in 1932, where he referred to the literature of both Burgenland Croats and Bunjevci Croats as an integral part of the Croatian literature. Soon after, his meticulous study Gradišćanski Hrvati (eng. Burgenland Croats) was published in 1934 and was ultimately printed in as many as two editions, also by the Croatian Literary Society of St. Jerome in Zagreb. In both of these works, Ujević emphasized the pressing need to form the relationship between his motherland and the West Hungarian (Burgenland) Croats. Building upon the previous research (Kukuljević-Sakcinski, Ljubić, Kurelac, Kuhač, Milčinović and others), he singled out some important Croatian authors of the 20th century, which include Karall, Meršić Miloradić, Blažević and Horvat. Initially started by Mate Ujević, it was a new form of cooperation that subsequently resulted in a series of activities where the Burgenland Croats had the opportunity to turn to their cultural roots.
